We’ve been riding for what seems like an eternity, and there is still no city on the horizon. We haven’t stopped to eat or rest, and my knees are killing me from riding so long.

“Zahid, if we don’t stop soon, I’m going to knock you off that horse myself,” I complain, trotting up to him.

“Keep your dress on,” he says. “Look closely, princess.”

I peer past his outstretched arm to see a thin, wavy line cast against the orange-red sun. “Just a mirage,” I say, waving my hand.

“No,” Toshana says. “Look harder.”

This time, I’m really straining my eyes. Putting a hand up to block out the sun’s rays, I gaze closer and notice crumbling black buildings dotted along the sand. As we draw closer, I come to see that many of these buildings have no roofs. Very few have the walls left standing. Large stones and broken statues pile up around the edges of destruction. “Is that...”

Zahid tilts his head. “Welcome to Ashana.”
